The difference between TRIAC dimming and ordinary flyback ICs lies in their ability to detect the conduction angle of the TRIAC to determine the LED current for dimming. This is the main advantage of TRIAC dimming, which will be introduced in this article.

While triac dimming has certain drawbacks, it also boasts numerous advantages. Its combination with incandescent and halogen lamps has secured a significant share of the dimming market. For LEDs to replace incandescent and halogen lamps using triac dimming, LED lighting must be compatible with triac dimming. So, what are the main advantages of triac dimming?

In some installations, incandescent or halogen lamps with triac dimming are already in place. The wall already has the triac dimmer switch and knob installed, and the two connecting wires to the fixture are already in the wall. Replacing the wall-mounted triac switch and adding wires is not easy; leaving it unchanged is the best approach. Simply unscrew the incandescent bulb and replace it with an LED bulb compatible with triac dimming. This is similar to LED fluorescent lamps; ideally, they would be the same size as current T10 and T8 fluorescent lamps. This doesn't require a professional electrician; the average person can directly replace the bulb, enabling rapid adoption. Therefore, many foreign manufacturers of LED driver ICs have produced ICs compatible with existing triac dimming.

The difference between triac dimming and ordinary flyback ICs lies in their ability to detect the triac's conduction angle to determine the LED current for dimming. This is the main advantage of triac dimming that this article will discuss.
